What is a Canada Visitor Visa?
A Canada Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is a
document issued by a Canadian visa office and placed in your passport. It
shows that you have met the requirements to enter Canada temporarily as a
visitor.
Having a visa does not guarantee entry into Canada. You must still travel
to a Canadian port of entry (airport or land border crossing), where a
border services officer will:
- Confirm your identity
- Verify your documentation
- Determine whether you may enter Canada
- Decide how long you are permitted to stay
Visitors are generally allowed to stay for up to six months from the date
they are admitted.
eTA vs. Visitor Visa: What's the Difference?
One of the first things you should determine is whether your country of
citizenship allows visa-free travel to Canada.
When do you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)?
If your country is eligible for visa-free travel to Canada, you do not need
a visitor visa to fly to Canada. Instead, you must apply for an Electronic
Travel Authorization (eTA), which is electronically linked to your passport.
Even if you are taking a connecting flight through Canada, you must have:
- An eTA, or
- A transit visa (depending on your nationality)
When is a Visitor Visa Required?
If your country is not classified as visa-exempt by the Canadian government,
you must apply for a Canada visitor visa.
Different Types of Visitor Visas Available
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issues Temporary Resident
Visas (TRVs) under four main categories.

each.

- Can be valid for up to 10 years
- Or until one month before your passport expires

permanent residents.
